Finally, I had managed to get out and go to my locker. â€Å"Maddie,† called my best friend Emily as she came running up to my locker. â€Å"Guess what? I got an A on my science test† Emily is super smart and she always gets good grades in school so I wasn’t surprised. â€Å"What is this, like A number 700,† I said sarcastically. We both laughed. â€Å"Hurry up, I want to get to lunch, I’m starving,† Emily said. I grabbed my books for my class after lunch, and we headed down to the cafeteria. On our way to the cafeteria, I saw a freshman just like me getting pushed around by one of the seniors. I couldn t tell who the senior was, but I recognized the freshman. She had straight blonde hair with big blue eyes and tan skin. She had been in a few of my classes. I wanted to step in and help her, but I just couldn’t, I was to scared. So all I did was stand there watching, wishing that I had the courage to go and help her. The bell rang and we were late to lunch. Emily and I ran to the cafeteria and sat down at our usual table. The legalization of abortion has been a long debate since 1865 and is still being debated today. An abortion is a procedure to end a pregnancy. Many people believe that abortions should not be legalized because it is essentially killing a human being. Others believe that it is the right of the woman to choose whether or not to have an abortion and say abortions should be legal. Since an abortion involves the termination of a potential human life, it has been illegal through most of the U.S history. However, abortion continues to be legal today although it still generates raging debates over its legal and ethical viability. The United States did not begin to prohibit abortion until the nineteenth century. Except abortions that were â€Å"necessary to save the life of the woman†, most abortions were illegal in the U.S. by 1880. One reason for making abortion crime was because most procedures done had high mortality rates. â€Å"The feller whose verdict counts most in your life, is the guy staring back from the glass.† The Guy in the Glass, a poem by Dave Wimbrow, tells the most important life lesson; if you have cheated yourself, your life really does not mean anything. I had this poem read to me right before my last J.R. Tucker football game. The head coach told us, â€Å"You guys are going to remember this game for the rest of your life. If you cheat yourself, the people in the bleachers will not know or care, but you are going to have to live with this.† Cheating yourself can affect other areas in life as well. It might be easy to grab a homework assignment from a friend and copy it before the teacher walks in. It might be easy to leave weightlifting early, when everyone else does. I choose not to do this though. However, if I got used to just copying other people’s work, it would result in more serious consequences, such as getting fired from a job or getting kicked out of college. I choose to stay the extra half an hour in the gym, so I can finish my weightlifting and know that I am just as even as the other guy across the line of scrimmage. Just as another part of the poem says,â€Å" Your final reward will be heartaches and tears, if you’ve cheated the guy in the glass,† nobody but me will be to blame. I will be the only one upset if I do not do my work or am not playing to the best of my ability. The poem is on the door to my bedroom. It is nothing special, just a piece of paper with a thumbtack in it, but this poem motivates me to do my best. Each day I read the poem so I will be ready for anything that comes during the day.
